Contribute to the justice, diversity, equity and inclusion practices of the American Camp Association (ACA) by (a) creating and maintaining frameworks that eliminate barriers to participation and engagement in the ACA, Southeastern field office, (b) building community relationships with experts that provide input to operations and training opportunities, and (c) providing consistent and meaningful opportunities for training with paid experts, conversation, and community-building, particularly for historically excluded groups in ACA, Southeastern.

Qualifications

·       Knowledge of and passion for camp and inclusion (e.g., disability, race/ethnicity, age, LGBTQ+)

·       Strong background knowledge of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion principles, language, and history.

·       A member of ACA (free one-year membership available)

Experience

·       Involvement with justice, equity, diversity and inclusion practices in a camp or organization.

·       Connections with (or ability to make connections with) experts in diversity, equity & inclusion in the camping industry.

Participation Includes

·       Collaborate with the LCOL to identify groups that have been historically excluded within ACA, Southeastern.

·       Collaborate with the LCOL to eliminate or reduce barriers for groups that have been historically excluded.

·       Create a culture within ACA, Southeastern that fosters important conversations around justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in a healthy and productive manner.

·       Establish opportunities for education and growth through trainings, workshops, or other modes of communication and connection, in conjunction with the PD Chair.

·       Participate and/or identify in ACA workgroups to provide support to ACA’s national DEI work.

·       Work with the LCOL and ACA staff to provide spaces where historically excluded groups can openly communicate their feelings and experiences in the ACA (and camping industry in general) and receive validation, support, a sense of community and belonging, and access to helpful resources and professional connections.

Responsibilities

·       Serve as the JEDI liaison and provide 2-way communication to ACA Staff about emerging issues.

·       Proactively seek input from experts and community members in historically excluded groups in the Association, which means identifying voices that are not being heard and finding meaningful ways to amplify them in the community.

·       Create and utilize committees to advance JEDI efforts within the camping industry within ACA, Southeastern.

·       Along with other Local Council of Leaders members, review consistent language and messaging to support ACA’s commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion that invites all members and potential members to be authentically represented.

·       Along with other LCOL members and ACA staff, create a culture of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

·       Provide guidance of resources maintained by ACA related to JEDI.

·       Establish a living resource guide available to all ACA, Southeastern members with helpful readings, videos, trainings, contacts, etc.

·       Follow all applicable ACA policies and procedures.

·       Provide updates at Local Council of Leaders meetings.

Time Commitment

The DEI Chair commits to:

·       Serve a two-year term. May a total of six years.

·       Attend LCOL 1 in-person and 3 Virtual Local Council of Leaders meetings.
